(Collaborative) Design Project

The motivation behind the CDP interdisciplinary research project is to resolve the current discrepancy between familiar, analogue ways of working in the early architectural design stages and the ever increasing use of digital tools in office practice. The project’s objective is the conception and prototypical realisation of an interactive work environment for use in the early design phases. By directly linking familiar analogue ways of working with digital computer aided design tools, the CDP represents a working environment that allows designers to work the way they are used to while making use of the potential of computers. A special aspect of the collaborative design project is the Tangible User Interface. An object on top of the table, which is a working model made of rigid styrodur foam is automatically scanned in three dimensions by a Microsoft Kinect and incorporated into the 3D city model. Using this newly created digital model, various analyses and simulations can be calculated and the results displayed. Changes to the form of the styrodur blocks, such as when they are trimmed or shaped, or changes to their position are updated directly in the scene, the simulation updating accordingly in real time. This is what facilitates the seamless interface between the digital tool and the architect’s familiar way of working by making it possible for a physical working model, as commonly used by architects, to interact directly with interactive design supporting simulations and analyses in real time.

Tangible Anchoring

Tangible Anchoring explores potential practices for news reporting and analysis afforded by the convergence of tabletop computing, mobile usergenerated content, the Web, and broadcast media channels.

Tangible Anchoring visualizes polling data in a TV studio setup. The polling data is collected via mobile phones. This data is used in political debates in TV, where one anchor and two political discussants interact with the data on a multitouch table. The data can be explored by using finger and tangible objects. Three additional monitors in the studio show the data on the table as well as short political statements from individual persons.

This project was sponsored by CNN, Turner Broadcasting. I worked on the project during my research visit at Synaestethic Media Lab, Georgia Insitute of Technology, Atlanta, USA under the Supervision of Prof. Ali Mazalek.

I was responsible for leading the design and the technical execution of a map-based information visualization. I helped create the overall project plan, the reading list for the students, and critiqued the design of interactions and tangibles during team sessions. I successfully incorporated existing code and generated new code to create a novel user interface for the tabletop, one that broadcasters could use to retrieve viewer-contributed video viewpoints. I also assisted the other co-lead in code reviews for other student’s work.

SpeedUp

SpeedUp supports the emergency management through mobile and stationary devices. A multitouch table gives an overview over the current circumstances during the time-critical situation in a mass casualty incidient, which involves a huge number of patients. A 2d map shows the current positions of the patients and of the relief units. Incident commanders interact with the map through simple and intuitive gestures. Further research was done with focus on information visualization.

Speedup is a nation wide project in cooperation with several academical and industrial partners.

Aeroacoustic Tailoring

Multiple 3D user interfaces are investigated to explore 3D scientific simulations, like the visualisation of complex flow fields.
Different possible user interfaces like a multitouch display and an accelerometer-based controller are tested as interaction devices.
Our research focus on the multitouch display is to find appropriate gestures for the manipulation of the 3d visualisation.

This is an interdisciplinary project in cooperation with the Institute of Aerodynamics.

Interconnected - the sized up art forum - is a concept for a social network website for media artists.
The aim of the website is to establish and strengthen the links between international artists, artists’ groups and art promoters to raise the profile of arts activity. Artists should have the possibility to discuss, explore and share their ideas and works.

A speciality is the breathing functionality, which shows the activity of the artist. A vibrating community is reflected thorugh a strong breathing countriy on the world map .
For that there will be an option to switch on, if the user wants to see the activity of the memebers.
Activity will be illustrated by breathing.

You change the exhibition is a museum 2.0 add-on for the upcoming exhibition Taranaki Culture- Fresh out of the box at Puke Ariki, a museum in New Plymouth, New Zealand. The project visualizes the interest of the museum visitors in each exhibition object.

The light in the boxes changes intensity depending on the interest in the object, glowing brighter or dimmer the more or less the visitor pays attention to the object.

Blue light shows the interest of people visiting a website. Red light visualizes the interest of the onsite visitor in the museum.

The project was developed during my exchange semester at the HITLab NZ.

Airport Information System

These illustrations are part of a presentation of the new Airport Information System. The system allows business men to check in via mobile phone before arriving at the airport. It gives also information about the airport (maps, timetable…).
I developed these graphics during my work at Siemens User Interface Department, Munich in Summer 2007.
